Francis Fukuyama, the American political scientist who once described the collapse of the Soviet Union as the “end of history,” suggested that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine might be called “the end of the end of history.” He meant that Vladimir Putin’s aggression signals a rollback of the ideals of a free Europe that emerged after 1991. Some observers suggest it may kick off a new Cold War, with an Iron Curtain separating the West from Russia.

Reports of Russian cyberattacks against our domestic infrastructure have raised alarms and calls for heightened vigilance across the United States’ public and private sectors. Given that the U.S. and its allies have imposed significant economic sanctions against Russia for its attack of Ukraine, state-sponsored Russian cyberattacks are likely; they may be viewed as an effective form of retaliation.

A group of 10 pilots at Jet Blue, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are suing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the federal transportation face mask mandate. The Southwest flight attendant union is taking a more placid approach, simply asking that the face mask mandate be ended when practical. The CEOs of all the major airlines, as well as the leading cargo carriers have also expressed a call to end the mandate.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia remains in El Salvador prison

FOX News, April 18, 2025

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen on Thursday met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who is being held in an El Salvador prison for over a month. Van Hollen is in the country advocating for the release of Abrego Garcia. He said he has been barred from approaching the CECOT prison – essentially a terrorist confinement center – in San Salvador where Garcia is being held. Trump administration officials on Monday dismissed efforts to bring Garcia back, saying the decision rested with El Salvador. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele also said Monday he lacked the authority to authorize Garcia’s return, calling the idea "preposterous" and likening it to an attempt to "smuggle a terrorist into the country.
